Catena Aurea - Gospel of Mark

Catena Aurea - Gospel of Mark

Thomas Aquinas (c. 1225–1274) was an Italian Dominican friar and the foremost scholastic theologian of the Middle Ages. Teaching at Paris and Naples, he sought to show faith and reason in harmony, drawing Aristotle into Christian theology. His Summa Theologiae and Summa Contra Gentiles — the latter partly represented here by Of God and His Creatures — and his Catena Aurea, a chain of patristic comments on the Gospels, are in our library.

About this book

Thomas Aquinas's 'Golden Chain' on the Gospel of Mark, compiled in the thirteenth century. Aquinas weaves together comments from the Church Fathers verse by verse, so that the reader hears the teachers of the early church expounding the Gospel in turn. Long used as a storehouse of patristic interpretation, it remains a rich companion for reading Mark slowly.
