John William McGarvey (1829–1911) was an American minister and educator of the Restoration Movement, teaching at the College of the Bible in Lexington, Kentucky, for forty-six years and serving as its president from 1895. A firm opponent of theological liberalism and higher criticism, he wrote commentaries valued for their defence of the Bible's historical reliability. Our library holds his Commentary on Acts of the Apostles and The Four-Fold Gospel.

John William McGarvey's commentary on the Acts of the Apostles, first published in 1892, was written for ordinary students of Scripture as much as for preachers. McGarvey works through Luke's history of the early church with careful attention to its places, times, and words, raising and answering questions passage by passage in a clear, patient, and reverent style.
