Discourse of the Efficient of Regeneration

Discourse of the Efficient of Regeneration

Stephen Charnock (1628–1680) was an English Puritan divine. Converted at Cambridge, he became a fellow of New College, Oxford, preached in Ireland and London, and after his ejection in 1662 later co-pastored a congregation in the city. Charnock is best known for his Discourses on the Existence and Attributes of God, a monument of Puritan theology; our library carries his discourses on regeneration and on the cleansing virtue of Christ's blood.

About this book

One of Stephen Charnock's posthumous discourses on regeneration, published in 1680. Here Charnock treats the efficient cause of the new birth: the Holy Spirit Himself, who alone can give life to a dead soul. He distinguishes the Spirit's work from the outward means He uses, grounding the doctrine carefully in Scripture throughout.
