Discourse of the Word, the Instrument of Regeneration

Discourse of the Word, the Instrument of Regeneration

Stephen Charnock (1628–1680) was an English Puritan divine. Converted at Cambridge, he became a fellow of New College, Oxford, preached in Ireland and London, and after his ejection in 1662 later co-pastored a congregation in the city. Charnock is best known for his Discourses on the Existence and Attributes of God, a monument of Puritan theology; our library carries his discourses on regeneration and on the cleansing virtue of Christ's blood.

About this book

One of Stephen Charnock's posthumous discourses on regeneration, published in 1680. Charnock shows how the Word of God serves as the instrument of the new birth: the Spirit ordinarily works through the preached and written gospel, not apart from it. The discourse honors both the sovereignty of the Spirit and the dignity of Scripture.
