The Necessity of Regeneration

The Necessity of Regeneration

Stephen Charnock (1628–1680) was an English Puritan divine. Converted at Cambridge, he became a fellow of New College, Oxford, preached in Ireland and London, and after his ejection in 1662 later co-pastored a congregation in the city. Charnock is best known for his Discourses on the Existence and Attributes of God, a monument of Puritan theology; our library carries his discourses on regeneration and on the cleansing virtue of Christ's blood.

About this book

One of Stephen Charnock's posthumous discourses on regeneration, published in 1680. Charnock proves from Scripture that the new birth is absolutely necessary: without it, no one can see or enter the kingdom of God, whatever his outward profession. The sermon is meant to strip away false hopes and drive the reader to seek the Spirit's renewing work.
