George Smith (1833–1919) was a Scottish journalist and biographer who spent his early career in India and became a leading popular authority on Indian missions. Settled in Edinburgh, he wrote lives of the missionaries his research had made him know well — William Carey, Alexander Duff, John Wilson, and others. His Life of William Carey (1885), drawn from Carey's letters, papers, and the recollections of friends, remains the standard biography in our library.

George Smith's biography tells the story of William Carey, an English shoemaker who became a Baptist missionary in India and a pioneer of modern Protestant missions. It follows his call, the formation of the Baptist Missionary Society, and decades of preaching, translation, education, and perseverance in Bengal. Carey's obscure beginnings and patient endurance give the narrative its enduring force.
