Monasticism: Its Ideals and History

Adolf von Harnack (1851–1930) was a Baltic German Lutheran theologian and the most famous church historian of his generation. Professor at Berlin, he traced Christianity's development in his monumental History of Dogma and popularized its 'essence' as the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man. Our library carries several volumes of his History of Dogma and his Essays on the Social Gospel — primary documents of liberal Protestant scholarship.

About this book

Adolf von Harnack's historical study of monasticism, tracing its ideals and its development within the life of the church. Harnack examines why men and women withdrew from ordinary society for prayer and discipline, and how monasteries shaped Christian devotion and learning. The discussion also turns to Augustine and his Confessions as a doorway into the monastic spirit.
