Adolf von Harnack (1851–1930) was a Baltic German Lutheran theologian and the most famous church historian of his generation. Professor at Berlin, he traced Christianity's development in his monumental History of Dogma and popularized its 'essence' as the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man. Our library carries several volumes of his History of Dogma and his Essays on the Social Gospel — primary documents of liberal Protestant scholarship.

Adolf von Harnack's famous Berlin lectures on the essence of Christianity, published in English in 1901. Harnack presents what he took to be the simple core of Jesus's teaching — the kingdom of God, God as Father, and the infinite value of the human soul. A defining statement of liberal Protestant theology.
