Adolf von Harnack (1851–1930) was a Baltic German Lutheran theologian and the most famous church historian of his generation. Professor at Berlin, he traced Christianity's development in his monumental History of Dogma and popularized its 'essence' as the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man. Our library carries several volumes of his History of Dogma and his Essays on the Social Gospel — primary documents of liberal Protestant scholarship.

Adolf von Harnack's historical study of the Apostles' Creed, published in English in 1901. Harnack traces the creed's origin and development in the early church and examines the meaning of its articles for modern believers. It is a concise example of his influential historical approach to Christian doctrine, presented with great learning and clarity of style.
