Origen (c. 185–c. 253) was a Christian scholar and ascetic of Alexandria and later Caesarea, and the most prolific writer of the early church. He produced commentaries, homilies, and textual work on nearly the whole Bible, including the six-column Hexapla. Our library holds his treatise On Prayer, an early and influential guide to the practice of prayer written for ordinary believers facing persecution.

The earliest surviving treatise devoted wholly to prayer, written by Origen of Alexandria in the third century. Origen asks what prayer is, why it is fitting to pray to the God who knows all things, and how the petitions of the Lord's Prayer are to be understood. A window into the devotion of the early church from one of its most influential teachers.
