Dwight Lyman Moody (1837–1899) was an American evangelist who left a Chicago shoe business for full-time Christian work. Through YMCA service, his Chicago church, and revival campaigns with singer Ira Sankey across Britain and America, he became the best-known evangelist of his century. He founded schools at Northfield and the Chicago institute that bears his name; our library holds his Prevailing Prayer, Sovereign Grace, and other popular books.

Lectures on prayer by evangelist D. L. Moody, first published in 1884 under the fuller title Prevailing Prayer: What Hinders It? Moody asks why so many prayers go unanswered and points to hindrances such as unforgiveness, unbelief, and neglected obedience. Plain-spoken and anecdotal, it reflects the practical urgency of his evangelistic preaching in America and Britain.
