Things as They Are: Mission Work in Southern India

Amy Beatrice Carmichael (1867–1951) was an Irish missionary who served in India for fifty-five years without furlough. After early work in Japan and Ceylon she settled at Dohnavur in Tamil Nadu, rescuing children from temple service and building the Dohnavur Fellowship to raise them. She wrote some thirty-five books; our library holds her early letters, From Sunrise Land, and Things as They Are, her unflinching account of South Indian mission work.

About this book

Amy Carmichael's early account of missionary work in southern India grew out of letters written from the field and was published in 1903. It describes evangelistic journeys, the people she met, and the formidable customs and disappointments that made converts few and labor slow. Its candor about difficulty, joined to quiet faith, distinguishes it from triumphal missionary reporting.
