Alexander MacLaren (1826–1910) was a Scottish Baptist minister famed for expository preaching. After early pastorates he settled at Union Chapel, Manchester, for forty-five years, and twice served as president of the Baptist Union. MacLaren prepared his sermons with a scholar's care and delivered them with a poet's touch; the many volumes of his Expositions of Holy Scripture — whole-Bible preaching in print — form his monument in our library.

Alexander MacLaren's studies trace David from the shepherd fields of Bethlehem to the throne of Israel and through the sorrows of his later reign. Drawing on the biblical narrative, MacLaren presents David as poet, warrior, sinner, penitent, and king, with a preacher's eye for character and conscience. The result is biography shaped for meditation as much as for information.
