Commenting and Commentaries

Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834–1892) was an English Baptist preacher who pastored London's Metropolitan Tabernacle for thirty-eight years. Converted as a teenager, he became the most widely heard preacher of the Victorian age — the 'Prince of Preachers' — drawing thousands weekly and publishing his sermons around the world. Our library carries his Morning and Evening devotional, The Treasury of David, and dozens of his sermon volumes.

About this book

C. H. Spurgeon's guide to Bible commentaries, first published in 1876. Growing out of his lectures to the students of his Pastors' College, the book surveys hundreds of commentaries with candor, humor, and shrewd judgment about which are worth a preacher's money and time. It remains an entertaining and genuinely useful map of the older commentary literature.
