Philip Schaff (1819–1893) was a Swiss-born church historian who taught at Mercersburg and later at Union Theological Seminary in New York. A bridge between German scholarship and the English-speaking church, he founded the American Society of Church History and edited vast reference works. Our library's Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers series — which he conceived and edited — together with his History of the Christian Church and Creeds of Christendom, came largely through his labors.

The first volume of Philip Schaff's Creeds of Christendom, a history of the creeds of the Christian church. Schaff traces how the church, from the Apostles' Creed onward, has stated its faith in every age, explaining the controversies and councils behind each confession. Learned, fair-minded, and clearly written, it is the natural introduction to the volumes of creeds that follow.
