Hymns from the Morningland

John Brownlie (1857–1925) was a Scottish Free Church minister and hymnologist. Born in Glasgow and educated at Glasgow University and the Free Church College, he served the Free Church at Portpatrick from 1885. Brownlie devoted his spare hours to translating the hymns of the ancient Greek and Latin churches; our library holds his Hymns of the Early Church, Hymns of the Holy Eastern Church, Hymns of the Russian Church, and related volumes.

About this book

John Brownlie's translations of hymns from the Greek church, published in 1911. A Scottish minister and hymnologist, Brownlie rendered the ancient offices and festivals of the East into English verse, with brief notes for the reader. The collection opens a window on the worship of the Greek-speaking church and its centuries-old praise of Christ.
