Hymns of the Early Church

John Brownlie (1857–1925) was a Scottish Free Church minister and hymnologist. Born in Glasgow and educated at Glasgow University and the Free Church College, he served the Free Church at Portpatrick from 1885. Brownlie devoted his spare hours to translating the hymns of the ancient Greek and Latin churches; our library holds his Hymns of the Early Church, Hymns of the Holy Eastern Church, Hymns of the Russian Church, and related volumes.

About this book

A collection of early church hymns in English translation by John Brownlie, published in 1917. Brownlie draws on Greek hymnody from the church's first centuries, giving English readers access to praise that predates the medieval West. Short introductions and a plain verse style make these ancient texts approachable for devotion as well as study.
