John Brownlie (1857–1925) was a Scottish Free Church minister and hymnologist. Born in Glasgow and educated at Glasgow University and the Free Church College, he served the Free Church at Portpatrick from 1885. Brownlie devoted his spare hours to translating the hymns of the ancient Greek and Latin churches; our library holds his Hymns of the Early Church, Hymns of the Holy Eastern Church, Hymns of the Russian Church, and related volumes.

John Brownlie's translations of hymns from the Eastern church, published in 1902. Continuing his work of opening Greek hymnody to English readers, Brownlie renders festal and daily offices in clear verse, with notes on their origins. The collection highlights the doctrinal richness and Christ-centred praise of the historic Eastern liturgy.
