John Brownlie (1857–1925) was a Scottish Free Church minister and hymnologist. Born in Glasgow and educated at Glasgow University and the Free Church College, he served the Free Church at Portpatrick from 1885. Brownlie devoted his spare hours to translating the hymns of the ancient Greek and Latin churches; our library holds his Hymns of the Early Church, Hymns of the Holy Eastern Church, Hymns of the Russian Church, and related volumes.

John Brownlie's English renderings of hymns associated with the church of the apostolic age, published in 1917. Working from early Greek Christian poetry and liturgical pieces, Brownlie presents the praise of the first generations of believers in verse form. The volume suits readers interested in how the earliest church confessed its faith in song.
