Hymns of the Russian Church

John Brownlie (1857–1925) was a Scottish Free Church minister and hymnologist. Born in Glasgow and educated at Glasgow University and the Free Church College, he served the Free Church at Portpatrick from 1885. Brownlie devoted his spare hours to translating the hymns of the ancient Greek and Latin churches; our library holds his Hymns of the Early Church, Hymns of the Holy Eastern Church, Hymns of the Russian Church, and related volumes.

About this book

John Brownlie's English versions of hymns from the Russian church, published in 1907. Drawing on Slavonic services in Greek and Russian use, Brownlie presents the church's praise of Christ, the saints' days, and the great feasts to English readers. The translations extend his lifelong project of making the hymnody of the Christian East known in the West.
